Maltese

Maltese is spoken by about 350,000 people on the Mediterranean islands of Malta and Gozo. It is also spoken in many other countries where Maltese have settled, including Australia, Canada and the United States.

Maltese belongs to the Semitic language family which also includes Arabic and Hebrew. It is the only Semitic language written in the Latin alphabet. The Maltese language developed from the Arabic spoken by the Arabs who invaded and occupied Malta in 870 AD. It has many similarities to urban Tunisian Arabic and also has many loan words from Sicilian, Southern Italian and English.
